…Commissioner Praises Union for Groundbreaking Initiative, Promises Ministry’s Collaboration in Future Editions
In a vibrant display of culture and unity, the Ekiti State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) hosted its inaugural “Iyan Day” as part of the 2024 NUJ Week celebrations.
The event, held with much fanfare, saw some of the Chapels under the Union preparing unique soups to complement the beloved Iyan delicacy, adding a splash of colour and flavour to the feast.
The cultural troupe of Idoma indigenes residing in Ekiti State, along with the energetic Kegite Gyration group, provided delightful performances that captivated the audience.

The event was well-attended by Union members from various Chapels, who came together to wine, dine, and celebrate their camaraderie.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy in Ekiti State, Professor Rasak Ojo-Bakare, expressed his delight over the NUJ’s initiative.
He said the programme aligns with his ministry’s mandate to promote Yoruba culture, heritage, and traditions.

Professor Ojo-Bakare announced plans for future collaborations with the NUJ to enhance subsequent editions of the event, emphasizing the mutual benefits of their ongoing relationship.
The Commissioner underscored the importance of leisure programmes like “Iyan Day” in alleviating boredom and fostering relaxation, advocating for their periodic hosting to strengthen love and unity among Nigerians.
In an interview, the Ekiti state NUJ Chairman, comrade Kayode Babatuyi, explained that the “Iyan Day” initiative was deliberately incorporated into the 2024 Press Week to celebrate Ekiti’s rich culture, particularly its renowned Iyan delicacy.

He noted that the event is also aimed at showcasing Ekiti to the world, promoting unity and love among journalists and the people of Ekiti, as well as providing members with a sense of belonging.
“We journalists have always been working without enjoying ourselves. This week is to enjoy and celebrate ourselves. We held a series of programmes, including a health outreach for our members, and this is part of it,” Mr Babatuyi stated.

Prominent figures graced the occasion, including the former chairman of the Union, Akogun Tai Oguntayo, Zone B National Vice President of the Union, Comrade Ronke Samo, immediate past Ekiti NUJ Chairman, comrade Rotimi Ojomoyela, Director-General, Ekiti State Bureau of Civic Orientation and Citizenship, Mrs Olawumi Famuyiwa, the immediate past chairperson of the State Women Wing of the Union, Comrade Fatima Bello, among other dignitaries
