The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing Nigeria’s energy sector, celebrating the successful restart of the 60,000 barrels-per-day (bpd) Old Port Harcourt Refinery while addressing misinformation about its operations.
In a statement issued by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, the company expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their unwavering support as the refinery resumes production after years of operational challenges.
According to NNPC Ltd, the Old Port Harcourt Refinery is currently operating at 70% of its installed capacity, with plans to increase production to 90% soon.
The refinery is now producing 1.4 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) daily from Straight-Run Gasoline (Naphtha), 900,000 litres of kerosene, 1.5 million litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO or diesel), and 2.1 million litres of Low Pour Fuel Oil (LPFO) while additional volumes of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) are also being generated.
To ensure that the gasoline meets the required specifications, the refinery incorporates crack C5, a blending component supplied by Indorama Petrochemicals, into its processes. NNPC Ltd clarified that this approach is standard practice in refineries worldwide.
The company further highlighted the progress made on the new Port Harcourt Refinery, stating that operations would commence soon.
While specific timelines were not disclosed, NNPC Ltd emphasized that these efforts underline its commitment to revitalizing Nigeria’s energy sector under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.
“We urge Nigerians to focus on the remarkable achievements being realized and to support efforts aimed at delivering more dividends to the nation,” the statement read, warning that misinformation about ongoing progress only serves to undermine national development efforts.
NNPC Ltd remains committed to building a stronger, self-sufficient energy sector and reaffirmed its resolve to contribute significantly to the country’s economic growth and energy security.
