The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded Nigeria a 3-0 victory and three crucial points after determining that Libya breached regulations in their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifier.
The decision, released on Saturday and signed by Disciplinary Board Chairman Ousmane Kane, came after CAF found the Libya Football Federation in violation of specific competition regulations.
Libya was penalized under Article 31 of the AFCON Regulations, as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
As a result, the October 15 match scheduled between Libya and Nigeria in Benghazi was declared forfeited by Libya, granting Nigeria a 3-0 win.
In addition to the match forfeit, CAF imposed a fine of USD 50,000 on the Libya Football Federation, with a deadline of 60 days for payment.
All other motions for relief filed by Libya were dismissed.
This ruling has strengthened Nigeria’s position in the AFCON qualifying race, moving the Super Eagles to the top of their group with 10 points from four matches.
With only one qualifying match remaining against Benin Republic on November 14, Nigeria needs just a win or draw to secure their place at the 2025 AFCON tournament in Morocco.
Libya, meanwhile, is effectively out of contention, trailing the group with only one point.
