Ekiti Govt Seals Building Over Sewage Discharge Into Street

The Ekiti State Government has warned house owners, restaurants, and food canteens to maintain proper hygiene and ensure their sewage systems do not pollute the environment or cause offensive odours.

Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Erelu Tosin Aluko, gave the warning while sealing off a building on Ilawe Road in Ado Ekiti where occupants were discharging sewage from a septic tank directly into the street.

Erelu Aluko described the act as babaric, saying the indiscriminate release of liquid waste could lead to diarrhoea, dysentery, cholera, and other water-borne diseases.

“People must be mindful of discharging sewage or dangerous substances into running water, which generates offensive odour and puts residents at risk,” she said.

Also speaking, the State Director of Environmental Health and Sanitation, Mr. Ayodele Aluko, urged residents to make environmental sanitation a daily habit.

He called on them to take part actively in the monthly sanitation exercise by cleaning their surroundings.

The Director of Environmental Health and Sanitation said consistent cleaning would prevent the spread of diseases and improve public health across the state.
