Stakeholders Chart Path for Inclusion of Students with Special Needs in Ekiti Schools

In a significant move to enhance Special Education and Social inclusion in Ekiti State, the Ministry of Education’s School Department has held a stakeholders’ meeting to develop special education frameworks and promote inclusive practices in schools.

The event brought together education officers, principals, and notable government officials.

The Chairman of the Teaching Service Commission, Mrs. Rhoda Olufunke Ojo, stressed the need to raise awareness among teaching and non-teaching staff about the challenges faced by students with special needs.

She shared an inspiring story of a deaf student who attended Christ School 40 years ago, where teachers quickly learned sign language to support the child.

“Today’s session underscores the importance of understanding the diverse needs of all students under our care,” said Mrs. Ojo.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Education and Social Inclusion, Princess Adetoun Agboola, who led a crucial segment of the meeting, discussed best practices for supporting students with disabilities and emphasized fostering a culture of acceptance within mainstream educational settings.

She said it was vital that a conversation about inclusive education in Ekiti State be established.

Princess Agboola explained that while Ekiti has made progress in supporting individuals with disabilities, the current special school structure is largely segregated.

“Our goal is to transition towards a model of inclusivity where all students, regardless of their challenges, can learn together,” she asserted.

She also stressed the importance of feedback from participants to improve inclusive education policies.

“Today’s programme is not just a discussion; it’s a foundation for shaping our educational future towards a more inclusive system that aligns with global standards,” Agboola added.

In her submission, the Commissioner for Education, Dr Kofoworola Aderiye, praised the participants and encouraged them to learn additional languages and sign language to facilitate better communication beyond English and local dialects.

The workshop highlighted the importance of collaboration among educators, policymakers, and the community to ensure that every child, regardless of their ability, has access to quality education in an inclusive environment.

With the combined efforts of stakeholders, the initiative aims to set a precedent for a more inclusive educational framework in Ekiti State, paving the way for a brighter future for students with special needs.
