No Ransom Paid, Oyo Govt Confirms Release of Kidnapped School children, Teachers

The Oyo State Government has defended its decision not to pay ransom to kidnappers, saying the policy ultimately paid off with the successful release of the pupils and teachers abducted from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area.

The government said the safe return of the victims after weeks in captivity demonstrates that a principled approach to tackling kidnapping is more effective than yielding to criminals’ demands.

It maintained that paying ransom would only embolden kidnappers and encourage further attacks.

The state commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, disclosed this in a statement on Friday while confirming that all the abducted pupils and teachers had regained their freedom.

He described their release as a victory for resilience, coordinated security efforts and the Makinde administration’s unwavering commitment to fighting insecurity.

According to Oyelade, the state came under intense pressure to negotiate with the kidnappers through ransom payments, but Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration rejected what he described as a “quick-fix” option in favour of a long-term strategy aimed at dismantling criminal networks and discouraging future abductions.

He said the government’s position reflects its determination to confront kidnapping through sustainable security measures, working closely with security agencies to restore peace and protect communities across the state.

The commissioner also commended security operatives and all those involved in the rescue operation, reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property and ensuring schools remain safe learning environments.
