Fayemi Mourns Tragic Loss of Over 30 Children in Ibadan Stampede, Calls for Stricter Safety Measures

Dr. Kayode Fayemi, former Governor of Ekiti State and ex-chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), has expressed sorrow over the tragic death of more than 30 children during a stampede at a recent event in Ibadan, Oyo State.

In a statement issued by his media office in Abuja, Fayemi extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the Oyo State Government, describing the incident as a devastating tragedy that has overshadowed the Christmas celebrations.

“It is with a heavy heart that I received the news of the loss of over 30 children in a stampede during a Christmas event in Ibadan. This heartbreaking incident, which has also left many others injured, is one of the most tragic events involving children in our nation’s history,” Fayemi stated.

As a parent and leader, he noted the enormity of the grief, emphasizing that the loss of so many young lives is “unspeakable.”

He prayed for the swift recovery of the injured and extended his deepest sympathies to the grieving families, the Oyo State Government, and the people of Ibadan.

Fayemi highlighted the need for event organizers to prioritize safety and adhere to global best practices in planning large gatherings, especially those involving children.

He called on authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident and hold those responsible accountable.

“This tragedy underscores the critical need for stringent safety measures at public gatherings. I urge state governments to consider prohibiting non-academic events in public schools unless strict safety protocols are implemented,” he added.

Fayemi prayed for the repose of the souls of the departed and strength for the families to endure their irreparable loss.
