President Tinubu Orders Police to Restore Peace in Rivers Following Election Unrest

President Bola Tinubu has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara, political leaders, and their supporters in Rivers State to exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law amid rising tensions following the recent local government council elections.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu expressed concern over reports of violence, including arson and explosions, in the state.

He urged political actors to de-escalate the situation and discourage their supporters from engaging in violence or destructive acts.

The President directed law enforcement agencies, particularly the police, to take immediate action to restore peace and maintain law and order.

He also emphasized the need to protect public institutions, stressing that government facilities funded by taxpayers must not fall victim to vandalism.

Tinubu reiterated that in a democracy, resorting to self-help is unacceptable, especially after 25 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.

He further noted that the judiciary remains the proper avenue for resolving political disputes, including any arising from the recent elections.
