Senator Ndume Decries Rampant Corruption Among Nigerian Politicians, Calls for Unexplained Wealth Act

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, has expressed concern over the widespread corruption among Nigerian politicians, stating that many engage in corrupt practices with impunity.

Ndume emphasized the need for stronger laws to tackle the issue, noting that Nigeria currently lacks effective legal frameworks to address corruption both proactively and reactively.

Speaking on the situation, Ndume remarked, “It is only in this country that somebody who had no money last week suddenly buys 10 cars or a private jet, and his family celebrates with him.”

He further criticized the celebration of corrupt individuals, saying, “If you see someone in politics or government who is not corrupt, it’s likely because they are God-fearing. Otherwise, it is common in Nigeria for people to steal money, walk freely, and be celebrated.”

Ndume called for the introduction of an Unexplained Wealth Act and an Executive Order to curb corrupt practices. “Up till now, there is no law on unexplained wealth in Nigeria, and there is no Executive Order on it,” he said.

He also touched on the issue of food insecurity in Nigeria, stating that despite the country’s vast arable land, only a small fraction is being cultivated.

“There is hunger in the land, and up till now, we have not cultivated up to five per cent of our land. Nigeria is blessed with massive arable land,” Ndume noted.
