NIS Expands Contactless Passport Renewal System to More Countries

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced the next phase in the global rollout of its Contactless Biometric Passport Application System, enabling Nigerians in the diaspora to renew their passports without visiting physical passport centres.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the NIS Public Relations Officer, ACI AS Akinlabi, the new phase will cover the United States, Mexico, Jamaica, and Brazil.

The system will go live in the U.S. on April 11, 2025, and in Mexico, Jamaica, and Brazil on April 14, 2025.

The initiative, which is being implemented under the leadership of Comptroller General, Kemi Nanna Nandap, is aimed at simplifying and modernizing passport processing for Nigerians living abroad by introducing a fully digital and contactless application system.

“The application system, currently available for download on the Google Play Store under the name NIS Mobile, enables Nigerians to renew their passports from anywhere without having to visit any passport office for biometric enrollment,” the statement noted.

An iOS version of the app will soon be launched on the Apple Store, with an upgraded version for both Android and iOS users expected shortly to enhance user experience and improve accessibility.

With this latest expansion, the contactless passport system is now operational in Canada, the USA, Mexico, Jamaica, Brazil, Europe, and Asia.

The NIS, however,, clarified that the service is not yet available in Australia and Nigeria, with a rollout date for those regions to be announced in the future.

Reaffirming its dedication to innovation and efficient service delivery, the NIS assured Nigerians worldwide of its continued efforts to make passport services more accessible, secure, and convenient.

“The Service remains committed to innovative and efficient service delivery to Nigerians anywhere in the world,” the statement concluded.
