A social-cultural group, ‘Oyo Lawa’, has lamented that the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Oyo State at the just concluded Ibadan North Bye-Election lost Ibadan North federal constituency to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) despite the party having a serving Senator in Oyo South Senatorial District.
Ibadan North federal constituency has one out of nine local governments that comprise the Oyo South Senatorial District.
The Group fumed over the failure of the current Oyo South Senator to secure convincing votes for his party in last Saturday’s Bye-election.
The group, who expressed disappointment, said even though Ibadan North federal constituency falls within the APC Senatorial District, all that the lawmaker could do was to just win only his polling booth for the APC and couldn’t secure more votes for the party for the bye-election in his Senatorial District.
A statement by the President of the group, Egunjobi Oludare, said the loss of the APC in the bye-election has shown that the lawmaker is not widely accepted in the Senatorial District, particularly when 2027 is around the corner.
“It’s a shame for a Senator whose Senatoral District has nine local government, and couldn’t win just one out of the nine local government for his party, celebrating he won his polling boot.
“APC should look inward in presenting a God fearing man who will take the welfare of the Senatorial district as a priority in subsequent elections.
“He had one time being a chairman of Ibadan North local government, yet, he couldn’t win convincingly for the party, it mean that he won in 2023 with the tsunami of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emergence.
“For a party that produced a serving Senator in Oyo South to have lost the bye-election, it means that the performance of the Senator is very poor.”
The group urged APC to investigate what led to defeat of APC in the election despite having a serving Senator who Ibadan North federal constituency falls within his Senatorial District.
According to the group, the lack of support from the senator was evident in the election results, where the APC candidate failed to secure a significant number of votes in the district. Our concern as a social and cultural group is based on the performance of the late Akinremi Jagaba. Akinremi has planted a genuine love of APC in us that we couldn’t cope with the loss of the bye-election to PDP.
Egunjobi, however, said the loss of the APC in the bye-election raises questions about the Senator’s effectiveness in his senatorial district.
