The All Progressives Congress (APC) has justified President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State, accusing Governor Siminalayi Fubara of being responsible for the crisis that led to the drastic measure.
The declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State has sparked widespread debate, with opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), rejecting it as unconstitutional and an attack on democracy.
However, in a statement issued on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party alleged that Fubara’s actions, including the demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly, created a constitutional void that necessitated federal intervention.
APC Maintains that Tinubu’s action was in the best interest of the state and its residents.

“When he brazenly demolished the Rivers State House of Assembly, Fubara destroyed the very foundation of democracy in the state, When he governed the state without a legislature and expended state funds without valid legislative appropriation, he stripped himself of all constitutional protections of the office of governor.” the APC stated.
The party further argued that the Supreme Court had affirmed that there was no functioning government in Rivers State, given the absence of a working legislature, insisting that Fubara’s alleged defiance of constitutional norms set the stage for the emergency rule.
According to the APC, President Tinubu’s intervention was a “necessary, constitutionally-backed measure” to prevent a breakdown of law and order and ensure the protection of lives and property.
“The safety and well-being of the people is paramount at this time and must trump all political considerations, commending the president for his “courage and leadership” in handling the situation,” Morka emphasized.
